The Museum of Asian Art

Since 21.09.2021, the Museum of Asian Art has reopened in the Humboldt Forum. It is located on the 3rd floor of the reconstructed City Palace in the centre of Berlin.

The Collection of South, South-East and Central Asian Art houses one of the world’s most important collections of works of art from the Indo-Asian cultural area from the 4th millennium BC to the 19th century. At the heart of the collection are the unique Central Asian wall paintings from Buddhist cave temples along the Silk Road, now displayed in a central location under the dome of the Palace.

Many exhibits from South Asia, the Himalayas and Southeast Asia have also found a new home in the spacious galleries.

Visitors will be able to explore the origin and significance of the exhibits through media presentations.

Parts of the study collection and the archive will remain in the building of the old Museum Dahlem. A research campus will be created there. In cooperation with the Free University of Berlin and scholars from the countries of origin, questions relating to the history, significance and acquisition of the collection objects will be investigated. It will also serve as a testing ground for exhibition concepts.
