The least known participant of the four Turfan expeditions (1902-14) of the Berlin Ethnological Museum is Hermann Pohrt. He only participated in the third expedition, so the museum’s files contain very little information about him. However, without exception, all of the well-focused photographs that are now in the possession of the Museum of Asian Art and that are used again and again today are his pictures. Who was this Hermann Pohrt and why does his name not appear in the museum’s files after his only trip, neither as a colleague nor as a friend? Let the lecture take you on an exciting research project with surprising results.
